Saturday Luncheon

Another lovely saturday, another lovely morning to wake up early so I can get ready properly for the usual lovely Tea Lunch, aka dim sum and tea with my family. This is known as THE lunch where EVERYONE cannot get enough of the latest gossips surrounding EVERYONE at the table. A usual one hour lunch can go into double time easily if anyone happened to have gone on a trip, aka, me. Anywayz, that's not the point of this blog. The point is, how to dress up for family luncheons. Think sweet, innocent, and lovely.

Do's:
1. Always take a shower to freshen up.

2.Wash your hair, towel dry, put abit of mousse and work into the damp hair, and style them into neat tidy looking locks. Spray on some hair gel to hold them in place. If possible, some hair shine spray would help as well.

3. Neutral color one piece dresses always carry a clean and innocent image. If you want patterns, pick the floral ones. Stay FAR AWAY from animal and geometric prints. Leave them for the NIGHT when you go out with your FRIENDS. Find a matching cardigan to go with the dress. If you want to add some accessories, a belt and a hat would do the trick. Try the London style little miss sunshine round hats for a change of scenery. Boots or flats with high rise black socks, no high heels, unless you are attending the Four Season Hotel High Tea after the lunch.

4. Pick a floral scent, something like Anna Sui Dolly Girl or Gucci Envy me with a twist of spice and vanilla. Remember, the other ladies at the table might have other heavier scents on. Have pity for the gents and just keep it light, two spray of it would do. Keep a sample size one in your purse if you need to go to another gathering later. Remember: reapply in the ladies room, not in front of everyone. Fragrances are suppose to be an open secret: everyone knows you have it on, but they don't know WHAT you have on, so don't break that mystery around your scent. ( unless another lady dare to ask, then you may share your greatest secret weapon if you feel like it.)

Don't:

1. Do not wear a black bra under a white shirt, or a white bra under a black shirt. You know the rules, this is bedroom stuff with your intimate significant other, not to be shared with the world and certainly NOT your family members.

2. Try to keep your behavior items out of sight EVEN when it is in your purse. Cigarrettes, lighters, poker decks, little bottles of volka. . . keep them in a small bag within your purse, or leave them in the car.

3. Do not bring your bags of shopping items with you to the lunch table because 1) waste of another chair to put your items, 2) a show off and 3) EVERYONE will want you to show them what you've got. So try to put them into the car first or if you absolutely have to, put all the bags into one big bag so it won't look THAT obvious you have commited a shopping spree. . .well, I forgive you.

4. Do not eat before everyone else. In some families there are prayers to be made. For those who are the plus ones going to another friend or your significant other's first family lunch/dinner/gathering, WATCH!!!! When the parents of the person invited you starts to eat, then you may eat. Usually in casual gatherings it is not that strict, but once again if your image is at stike or if your future demands on it ( say. . .love?), hold that hunger and FOCUS my lovelys.

Have fun luncheon, xoxo ~

Exchange Fashion @ Fashion Exchange

Ten years ago when I started shopping at thift shops and second hand boutiques, my friends laughed at me for being cheap. Ten years later when my friends ask me where I bought my stuff, it's the same thift shops I told them ten years ago and they exchanged in loads of compliment instead of words of critizism. What's the lesson learned here? Let's apply a famous quote from THE Coco Chanel her highness:

"Fashion fades, only style remains the same." Coco Chanel.

I suppose I'm just staying true to my own style. Thank you Ms. Chanel I love you forever xoxo.

A few local Second Hand Consignment Shops that I would suggest my lovely fashionistas to trade your garments at:

1. C'est La Vie Consignment Boutique
3247 Main Street ( around the corner of main street and 16th/17th ave)
604-876-2284
I have been going there for 3 years now, the owner is a lovely fashionista who's keen sense of style is responsible for the romantic french atmosphere that her store is well known for. Not to mention her unique picks of clothes. Here's the tip for going to C'est La Vie: pick out the clothes that you don't need, pick the ones that are in season, take pictures for each garment, wash them out, iron them, pack them neatly into a shopping bag, drop it off at the boutique, and leave your name and phone number. The owner will go through your items and takes the stuff that she thinks will sell and will return the stuff that she doesn't need back to you. Btw, they split 50/50. Pretty decent, I would say.

2. Le Balle Consignment
Forgot the address, but it's on 41st ave in the Kerrisdale area, by Balsam street.
778-737-0371

Also 50/50, they have more of the elegant English/European style, the more classy taste as well as more designer outfits.

3. Front & Company
3771 Main Street
604-879-8431

Gotta LOVE this shop. It was unfortunately burnt down last year in the summer, and for close to half a year, I was driving up and down main street checking on the progress of the rebuilding of this shop. It has both consignment items as well as boutique fashion items. It also has a second shop next to the clothing store which sells stationaries and other cute/elegant little things that I adore very much. Not to mention it is on one of my fave hang out street in Vancouver. Love love love.

4. Mintage

Check out the website and you will know what i'm talking about. The glamour is within.

As with all "come back" moments from any trip, I'm just having a really hard time trying to adjust to the Vancouver west coast life style. For the first time in life I do feel that the world is my own backyard. . . I really can go anywhere I want. Although I will always call Vancouver my home, but I begin to feel how much I do not know about other places that I've never been to, and hopefully, I can make it to most of the wonders of the world.

And to all my friends all over the world. .. I miss u all. . . .

But then again, I did bought home the snow from Austria. Sorry 604, but I have to say that the sudden snow helped me to ease my empty heart bit by bit. . . 12 days of no phone calls. . .it's like. . heaven. . .

And also there's the new H&M Magazines and SJP for cover "BAZAAR" mag to cheer me up while listening to One Arm Bear's "Blurred" album. At the worse, I will just put on the "Sex and the City" movie 24/7 to get myself out of the "post-vacation" syndrome. Knocking on wood.

PS:

Uncle Carl. . . . I miss u so much. . . I will always remember the times we go on our little trips together and everything you taught me throughout the years. . . love you, miss you, memories forever, I will eventually see you soon in the better world.

with love, kaila.

The day i almost went over the edge. . .

Unless you have absolutely no other civilized social events or decent pubs to go, you can try the Penguin Pub at Semmering of Austria. I had my temper test and survived without turning into the worst of all divas, thanks to the most decent friends I had with me while I try to search for all the grace I process within.

So, if you do plan to go to Semmering of Austria, make sure you DO NOT go to:

Penguin Pub

And god forbid you to run into the worst barista I have EVER met in my life:

Simone.

With love, xoxo
Kaila

Valentine's Day in Vienna

It doesn't matter what I did on the big V Day, because I'm in Vienna, and I love Vienna. End of story.

Finding My Way Through Heathrow

After finishing the very overbooked 4 shows in one month, I found myself suddenly stress free sitting in the airport station bus at Heathrow Airport. The excitment and freedom was so overwelming that not even the complicated connection flight plans would have dampen my spirit. I literally had to order a coke and a steak breakfast at the EST restaurant @ Terminal 2 of the Heathrow Airport to celebrate everything in life. Everything. Well, actually, my silent prayer started off with " Thank you for sending me through the Atlantic in one piece." By the way, the EST restaurant is actually pretty good. It's on the upper floor at the terminal 2. It's sort of like Denny's, except it's fancier. If western big dish food is not your thing, there's a Fish Bar at the lower level that serves smoked salmon, fresh oysters and wine. Yes, at the airport.

It is however pretty devastising that I am not allowed to purchase any liquid products at the duty free shops due to that color alert code of rules of safety. I had my eyes on several fragrances including the new Marc Jacobs Daisy Limited Edition. Better yet, the Miss Cherie fragrance that is only 57 Euro for 50ml EDP, or the Dune Midnight EDP 50ml for 47 Euro. Perfumes. . .the only one thing I just cannot resist. It is more alluring than a diamond ring, more affecting to the senses within the 5m radius, and more magical than anything anyone can put on because just like magic, it's invisible. Not your though, if you had perfume on. Definitely not and I swear by Channel No. 5 to do the ultimate magic. I'm sure all the divas from the past, present and future would agree.

One thing none of the divas from the past, present and future would agree with will have to be that hailarious rule of taking off shoes at the security check in. It is, unfortunately, still in effect. How brutal, don't you agree my lovelys??

xoxo, Kaila, from Semmering, Austria.

Stay in Grace

Typically I am not a rushing person. However, I do have some bad time management moments and today is one of those. When looking back at it now ( 9:00pm, sitting in my cozy den with my self made Starbucks coffee and creme bulee from Meinhardt, calmed and back to my own self) it was quite intense.

I have one thing to do today, and it was to go to downtown Vancouver and do a foreign exchange transaction. After observing the currency for a week, today is THE day to get the best rate. Yes, I do pay attention to the international fianical market. And no, I do not depend on it to survive but being a fashionista I like to be in the know of everything. EVERYTHING. Imagine having nothing to talk about at a cocktail gala. How cold.

The insituition closes at 5, and I left my loft at 3:30 thinking I would make it in time easily but boy was I wrong. It usually takes 3o mins to get to downtown for my area which wasn't too difficult. Today, however, I got JAM STUCK two blocks away from my destination for 20 mins due to road works. Alot of road works. While I silently express my anger in my own head, I still had to find a decent parking lot. Not spot, a lot. Getting a parking spot at 4pm in downtown is almost as crazy as winning the lottery. And out of all the lots I had to pick the one that I had never been into. Struggling to find my way out of the lot, I had no choice but to speed walk through Holt Renfrew. I apologize here to all the HR staffs for not paying attention to their beautifully decorated halls, nor their ever so automatic greetings. Getting the highest exchange rate would have to come before checking out all of the reduced price designer bags. ( I know. . how could I? but I did, so I guess I was rushed to the max.)

In the end I made it with 10 mins to spare.

And was once again stuck in downtown due to rush hour traffics.

So I thought: " . . . ain't getting myself stuck in no traffic girl." and ended up having a very cozy dinner with myself and the game. The hockey game. Washionton 5, New Jersey 2. Like I said, I like to be in the know. Otherwise what should I talk about while having a honey lager with the gentlemen ^^?

Afterall, A Girl's Gotta Eat^^

No I didn't gave into my inner demons nor have I gone insane. It was this one week which I just could not refuse food. Yes, food. Not just any food, it was the 3 course-fine-dine dinner which, if I am not mistaken, all comes with DESSERT. What was the celebration? LOL, my birthday. ^^

And I gained SIX POUNDS in two weeks. wow. So, what do I imploy to battle these extra six pounds of extra fat? Well, here's the 2 week cleansing program I'm taking on, and I'm currently working on day 2. Wish me luck.

Day A:

Breakfast: 2 Whole wheat/Mulit grain Toast, with butter, half an apple/pear, one bowl of cereal, 2 pieces of maple ham/sauages.

Lunch: Fresh greeen salad, grilled fish/chicken, rice/pasta/dumplings, and your choice of soup.

Dinner: boiled veggies, steamed pork and half a bowl of multigrain rice. follow with some fruit.

In between if hungry: 100 calories or below power bars or a bowl of cereal.

Day B:

Breakfast: Miso soup with tofu and seaweed, one egg omlette with green pepper and ham.

Lunch: anything is fine by this week. Feel free to go for a burger but switch the french fries to a salad.

Dinner: clam chowder, meatball with pasta/pork and veggie dumplings, follow with some fruit.

In between if hungry: a fruit or a toast with cheese.

The benefit of this menu is to keep you on a fixed calories intake as well as a balanced nutrition intake. I got this from my previous modeling agency's president. God bless her. You will also save $$ since you will need to go greocery shopping on a fixed budget, not to mention packing your own lunch and skipping the gossip lunch hour. Some extra peace and quiet to enjoy your homemade gourmet soup/fruit/sugar free blue mountain coffee. Afterall, a girl's gotta eat. ( and an excuse to shop for your own lunch box, not the one you have been using since 8th grade from Mom.)
